RE

The 1988 Education Act states that ‘Religious Education has equal standing in relation to core subjects of the National Curriculum in that it is compulsory for all registered pupils’.

The aim of Religious Education in Nottingham City and Nottinghamshire is that pupils will know about and understand a range of religions and worldviews. They will express ideas and insights of their own into the significant human questions which religions address, gaining and deploying the skills needed to study religion. (Religious Education for All -The Agreed Syllabus for RE in Nottingham City and Nottinghamshire 2021-2026)

Through our Religious Education curriculum we aim:

  • to engage pupils in enquiring into and exploring questions arising from the study of religion and belief, so as to promote their personal, spiritual, moral, social and cultural development.
  • to provide learners with knowledge and understanding of Christianity and other principal religious traditions and beliefs represented in Great Britain.
  • to develop their understanding of the ways in which beliefs influence people in their behaviour, practices and outlook.
  • to enable learners to apply the insights of the principal religious traditions to their own search for identity and significance.
  • to enable learners to become aware of their own beliefs and values and to have a positive attitude to the search for meaning and purpose in life.
  • to encourage learners to develop a positive attitude towards other people who hold religious beliefs different from their own.

Intent

At Jesse Gray Primary School we believe that is vital that pupils learn from and about religious and non-religious views of the world, so that they can understand the world around them, becoming successful learners, confident individuals and responsible citizens. In R.E. we aim to teach a variety of religions and beliefs fairly, accurately and with good subject knowledge, allowing our pupils to recognise similarities and differences within their daily lives. We aim to allow children to appreciate the way that religious beliefs shape the life and behaviour of their peers and the wider world community. Our pupils will learn about religions and beliefs in a respectful environment, where they are encouraged to hold balanced and informed conversation about religion and world views; asking questions and responding to ideas. We will be sensitive to religions and beliefs within our school environment and our local community.

Our R.E. curriculum is designed to encourage empathy, creativity, imagination, enquiry, debate, discussion and independent thought.

IMPLEMENTATION

At Jesse Gray Primary School, we use ‘The Agreed Syllabus for RE in Nottingham City and Nottinghamshire 2021-2026.

Through progression in knowledge, expression and skills we study

Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, and Non – religious world views. We also aim to represent our school community by acknowledging celebration days of other faiths

We value the religious background of all our school community and encourage individuals to share their own experiences freely and without judgement. All religions and beliefs are treated with respect and sensitivity, and we value the links made between home, school and faith groups in our community. We have strong links with the local church community at St Paul’s West Bridgford who support our teaching. Additionally, we have a ‘Visits Offer’ which allows all children to visit and experience a range of places of worship including the National Holocaust Centre throughout their time with us.

IMPACT

Children at Jesse Gray Primary School enjoy learning about other religions and exploring why people choose their specific set of beliefs.

RE is taught weekly and offers distinctive opportunities to promote pupils’ spiritual, cultural, social and moral development. RE makes a key contribution to enabling pupils to consider British values, including tolerance and respect for people who hold different faiths and worldviews.

Through their R.E. learning, children are able to make links between then own lives and those in their community and wider world. Children enjoy having the opportunity to ask and answer the challenging questions of life in a safe and supportive environment. We aim to develop a strong sense of self, identity and belonging to flourish within our school community and be responsible citizens.

Monitoring of this area is achieved through discussions with pupils, observations in lessons and by reviewing the work and discussions children undertake in lessons. Pupil outcomes are assessed at the end of every unit of work so that areas for development can be identified to enhance future learning.
